Americans are currently in an era of significant uncertainty. The previous conventions that shaped the political landscape have disappeared to be replaced by, well, Donald Trump and Trumpism. It is not clear what impact this political overhaul will have for America. Of course, making predictions about the future is hard, but a period did exist when political professors, pundits, and politicians could at least anticipate where they were headed as a country. America’s foreign policy and relationships were secure, democracy was heavily protected, institutions were independent, and most importantly, the country was not led by a politically inexperienced president. There was optimism and dare I say confidence in the possibility of a future of liberal democracy. Today, instead, there is panic.

To quash this ever growing anxiety, it may be helpful to take a stand and perhaps try to map out what the future of America will look like in the next 4 to 10 years and in the long term. How will Trump’s election, his ideologies, political approach, and actions affect America, its institutions, and its core political value? In other words, what is the future of America after Trump? This book presents a breakdown of the critical areas that have been affected by the Trump Presidency from the economy, democracy, constitution, Supreme Court, trade to the face of the political party. It is broken down into nine different chapters each highlighting Trump’s effect on these issues and how this effect is very critical to the continued success and future of America as the greatest country on earth.

The book begins with a detailed discussion of what has been popularly dabbed Trumpism, a propagation of fear, hatred and threats thinly veiled as a president who is unafraid to say what needs to be said. Trumpism put aside every political convention that gave even a semblance of diplomacy in the arena of public service and instead installed Trump as the only leader in the race willing to do what was necessary to save America. The reality is of course different because upon taking office, Trump’s first term has been nothing short of a train wreck characterized by dishonesty, ignorance, misinformation, nepotism, narcissism and unending falsehoods. His effects cannot just be felt by those working with him, but even by the Republican Party with which he is affiliated, and almost every independent institution put in place to protect the rights of the American. There is not one entity that has been able to chain his errant behavior, because he has out rightly attacked the free media, assumed the commitments he made to his political party and blatantly ignored direct orders from Congress. The outcome of his election and first term really, is a country at the cusp of uncertainty not knowing whether it will collapse or come out strong, and a people so laden with fear it is concerning.

The discussion of Trump’s perilous first term is then followed up by an examination of the possibility of Trump, despite his unmatched shortcomings as a president succeeding to earn a second term in office. The chapter assesses the reasons why Trump wants a second term from the big wall separating Mexico and the United States, his fixation on increasing the military budget, and his unexplained need to shrink the government among other factors. It also outlines the reasons why Trump is actually likely to succeed in reelection especially because throughout his presidency, Trump has been vetted time and again and still managed to survive. His impeachment trial especially, is thoroughly discussed detailing how the trial ensures that the country will experience no surprises with Trump because it already knows Trump’s track record and there are Americans who still believe that it is a positive track record.

Following the exploration of his current and possible future presidency, the book begins its scrutiny on Trump’s effect on different institutions critical to the American foundation. Chapter three assesses whether the Supreme Court and the constitution will survive Trump if he does get a second term. It highlights the current grip that he has on the Supreme Court and how he has repeatedly attacked this independent institution to bend it to the shape that he desires. It also highlights his continued assault and disregard for the constitution. This is highlighted in the book by his nepotism and his disregard for the Emolument’s clause and the consequential conflicts of interest that arise with his foreign businesses and his role as presidency. Are his foreign policy decisions as the presidency made to benefit his personal businesses and is he motivated by the need to protect the American people or his financial interest?

This then leads to a discussion of Trump’s effect on the economy. Since he took office, Trump has made enemies of America’s trade partners and alienated the country in trade agreements. The president’s decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), his approach to the NAFTA (Mexico and Canada) and KORUS (South Korea) renegotiations, his decision to block the appointment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) appellate body members, and the new tariffs put in place on aluminum and steel imply that Trump is no longer playing by the rules. What is most concerning is the trade war on tariffs that Trump begun with China. The chapter will place focus on how Trump took a confrontational approach with China, a country from which America relies heavily especially because majority of America’s production takes place in China. It will highlight the impact of this trade war especially with sharp reductions in bilateral trade, higher prices for consumers and more struggles for farmers and manufactures who depend on China’s production prowess.

Trump’s unhinged approach to leadership raises questions about whether his leadership style will shape politics in future. Will the public lose trust in its political body after all the antics Trump has presented? Will the value of the vote remain? What about issues of unity and issues regarding civic membership. Most importantly, how will efforts to impeach him shape the political arena? Chapter 5 will focus on the future of America and how the political atmosphere will be if after all of his antics with false information, lack of diplomacy, or even attack on the media the public will stop supporting him or he is impeached. It also assesses the impact of a continued Republic win on the politics especially with regards to liberal democracy and issues such as equality, civic membership, universal healthcare, immigration, reproductive rights, and gun control. The issue is that the country will be relegated to a more conservative and traditionally obsolete form of leadership that does not go hand in hand with the trends and changes occurring today. The effects of Trump’s leadership on the democracy are well highlighted in chapter 6 which highlights Trump’s anti-democratic tendencies and how Trump’s ideologies, decisions, and actions erode the very core of the American foundation, its democracy.

Chapter 7 and 8 highlight the irreversible effects that Trump’s policies have had and will continue having on global issues including climate change and arms. Trump’s stance on climate change and his subsequent policies will lead to irreversible global warming. For instance, his government worked to lower restrictions on methane emissions and to roll back climate change regulations a situation that is likely to have immense negative impacts on the climate in the long term. It does not do to have a president who does not believe in climate change but instead who focuses on nuclear weaponry. It is especially concerning that Trump’s government has approved additional funding for spending in nuclear warfare in the guise of eliminating low-yield weapons in the U.S. In the same breath Trump has torn up long term nuclear arms treaties such as the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF). The problem is that actions such as these increase the risk of nuclear confrontation because the treaties that helped to prevent all nuclear war have been dismantled by Trump and because of him, America must exist in a highly unregulated and indisputably dangerous world where the threat of nuclear war looms.

Expanding on Trump’s impact on global issues is his misguided foreign policy vision that is examined in chapter 9. This chapter will assess the impact of Trump’s policies on America’s relationship with Iran, Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Iraq and the Islamic State. It will also highlight the impact that Trump’s trade agreements will have not just on America but on global markets. Trump has taken to coercion against America’s partners. He has managed to increase the risk of nuclear war, and raised global doubts about the reliability and judgement of the U.S. The trade war with China, the NAFTA renegotiations, and the exit from the INF treaty are evidence of this. What these indicate is that America is currently headed by a president with poor impulse control and one who would risk war to get his way.

All in all, these chapters perfectly highlight exactly what Trump is not, a good president. They are a call for America to wake up and see that the future of America is doomed if at its helm sits Donald Trump.
