Contribution of Livestock Sector in Ethiopian Economy: A Review

Abstract


In Ethiopia, the agricultural sector is a corner stone of the economic and social life of the people. Livestock is an integral part of the agriculture and the contribution of live animals and their products to the agricultural economy accounts for 40%, excluding the values of draught power, manure and transport of people and products. The Livestock economic and social importance both at the household and national levels, and have in the past provided significant export earnings. Ethiopia has the largest livestock population in Africa, but the contribution for the economic aspect of the country is still lowest amount. Therefore it needs continuous commitment to reduce the different constraints and to boost the economic contribution of livestock sector.
