A Critical Appraisal of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015*

Abstract

The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (hereinafter known as ‘the VAPP Act’) came into force on 25^th May, 2015. The VAPP Act is comprised of 48 sections and 9 schedules consisting of six forms. According to the long titled of the Act, the object of the VAPP Act is to eliminate violence in private and public life, by providing maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment of offenders. It is recommended that the National Assembly should undertake an amendment of the VAPP Act to eliminate inter-alia certain misleading provisions of the Act, such as ss.36(1) and 39.
