African Union Human Rights System: Ruse or Reality?
Abstract
The study examined whether human rights actually exist and operate within the African regional system or it is merely a myth. The study further examined the African Union legal and institutional frameworks for human rights. The study found that there is an established human rights system with mechanisms for the protection and promotion of human rights within the African region with legislation such as the African Charter, Conventions, Protocols and Institutions such as the African Commission and the African Court. However, there are challenges undermining the enforcement of human rights within the region. The study concluded by identifying these challenges and proffering solutions for a viable and efficient human rights system in Africa.
