Control of Vortex Shedding around a Circular Cylinder by Using Meshy Wire
Abstract
The PIV measurement results are presented in this study for the flow around a circular cylinder surrounded by meshy wire. The diameter of the cylinder, D was 50 mm and the tests were done for the Reynolds number of Re=5000. Wire meshes having different porosities (β=0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8) with different wire thickness (b=1mm, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm) were used. The effects of porosity, β and wire thickness were investigated and the results were discussed to find out the optimum cases for effective flow control. Reynolds shear stress, < > results show that the vortices formed by the cylinder are suppressed and the velocity fluctuations in the wake region were affected by the meshy wire that surrounds the cylinder. The optimum wire thickness is b=4mm for each porosity value to control the flow structure the best results are achieved by β=0.6 for all cases.
