Abstract

This study, was made to investigate the antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1, strain HF, ATCC VR-260) of the methanol and water extracts obtained from Ferula halophila Peşmen, endemic to Turkey. For this purpose, the plant extracts were evaluated by the colorimetric XTT assay in vitro HSV-1/Vero cell systems. Results showed that both extracts of Ferula halophila possessed anti-HSV-1 activity (EC50 and SI values for methanol extract were 1035.29 µg/ml and 35.56 respectively; EC50 and SI values for water extract were 264.45 µg/ml and 130.81 respectively).
