Importance of Senses in Design Education: From Eye Centralism to Anti-Eye Centralism
Abstract
Today, in majority of the studies conducted in order to increase creativity in terms of effective design education, the concept of creativity is treated as an end-product. Whereas, in the development of the concept of creativity, it is thought that the awareness gained in sensory process will increase the creativity of the designer and the final end-products will be more satisfactory in terms of creativity. For this reason, using various activities for the sensory awareness education will change the way students sense their emotions. The effort to take out the students from the focus of information-based education and help them adopt different views and create awareness levels will bring the opportunity to educate individuals who are aware of their environments, senses and self-identities and all these gains will be transferred to the creative thinking and products of the students. For this reason, in order to create awareness for the senses, new vision metaphors that differ from the eye centering education methods that are frequently applied in design education, the importance of the senses and the anti-eye centripetal approach against eye centrism are discussed within the framework of design education. At the core of this paper, different thinking paths are questioned in order to develop creativity in design, emphasizing the importance of removing students from the focus of knowledge-centered.
