Abstract

Spinoza argues that we are (=) not the cause of our thoughts and actions, but only assume that we are based (e) on their affects upon us. This leads to (eb) dualisms of substance (such as Descartes’ mind/body split). Deleuze insists on this point because he sees Spinoza bypassing (e) an important illusion of subjectivity: we suppose (eb) that we are (=) causes and not effects. The illusion of consciousness, for Spinoza a result of inadequate knowledge and sad affects, allows us (eb) to posit a transcendental consciousness supposedly free from the interventions of the world (as in Descartes). This is in fact a blind-spot which precludes us from knowing ourselves as caused, the practical meaning of which is (=) that we deny our own ‘sociality’, as one mode amongst others, and the significance of the relations (e&eb) that we enter into, which actually determine (eb) our power to act, and our ability to experience......
