Sustainable Building Processes: Challenges and Strategies in Ghana Using the Relative Importance Index

Abdul Manan Dauda, Francis Lanme Guribie

Abstract

This study aims to identify the main challenges and strategies for promoting sustainable building practices in the construction industry. Based on survey data from 314 respondents, the research used the Relative Importance Index (RII) to rank strategies and conducted factor analysis to group both challenges and interventions. Results showed that high construction costs, financing issues, weak regulatory systems, lack of technical expertise, and poor stakeholder collaboration are the most significant barriers. Regarding strategies, government incentives and subsidies, capacity building, and stronger policies and regulations were found to be the most effective measures for advancing sustainable building practices.
