Transportation and National Development: Emphasis to Nigeria

Abstract


Development is crucial and essential to the sustenance and growth of any nation. A country is classified as developed when is able to provide qualitative life for her citizenry, also, the pride of any government is the attainment of higher value level of development in such a way that its citizens would derive natural attachment to governance. The development of transport in the overall activities of a nation is the ability to deliver an improved, efficient, effective, affordable, accessible, safe, reliable and an integrated transport system which will prosper the economic, social and political segments of the nation.Transport systems are closely related to socio-economic changes. The mobility of people and freight and levels of territorial accessibility are at the core of this relationship. Economic opportunities are likely to arise where transportation infrastructures are able to answer mobility needs and insure access to markets and resources. Despite the importance of transportation, it has huge effects on the environment.
