Innovative Developments in the Seed Coating Systems

Abstract

Seed coating has provided a great acceleration to the seed industry, especially in the last 20 years. Seed coating systems produced by various firms in Europe, USA and Far East are used very widely throughout the world, however, there isn’t enough progress in many countries that have economies dependent on agriculture. It is very important to spread seed coating throughout the world as it allows the decrease of the inputs in agriculture, increases in efficiency and the mechanization of agricultural production. Academic researches on seed coating and private sector based manufacturing of seed coating systems, seed coating production and the spread of various tools and equipment supplementary to seed coating are necessary to advance agriculture in the developing countries. The seed coating applications are marketed by the private sector in various countries through great investments and it is also imported and used by the developing countries that have economies based on agriculture. However, seed coating producers generally keep most of their methods, pelleting materials and R&D researches as secrets. This study has presents information about how pellet coating is done on seeds, working principles of vertical and horizontal seed coating machines, other machinery/equipment used during the coating, and pelleting materials. Its objective is to provide a guideline to the future scientific researches done on the pellet coating of seeds subject and to show the necessity of the agricultural industry placing greater importance on the subject.
