Determination of Variables That Affect the Mathematics Success of the 7th Grade Students

Abstract


In this study, the relationship between the socio-economic situations of the family that takes place in the TIMMS student survey, the students’ attitude, value and self confidence variables towards math and the 7th grade students’ academic success averages in the maths are examined. The dependent variable of the study is the students’ academic success grades in the math; the independent variable is the educational status of the mother and father in the TIMMS survey, the number of the books at home, attitude, value and self confidence variables towards math. In the analysis of the data, independent samples t-test, one way variance analysis and multiple regression analysis are used. As a result of the analysis, while the students’ academic success grades in the math do not change significantly according to gender and number of the books at home. It differs significantly with respect to the educational status of mother and father. Besides, attitude towards the math in the TIMMS survey, the value appraised to the math, self confidence variables at learning math significantly predicts the students’ academis success grades in the math.
