Perceptions of Climate Change in Africa: Regional Agricultural Perspectives

Abstract

Climate is the primary determinant of agricultural productivity. Poor livestock health, reduced crop yields and a range of other problems are attributed to climatic factors, especially wind. There were diverse and mixed views about the causes and indicators of climate change across and within communities in Africa, despite the evidence of a general awareness. It was observed that impacts of climate variability among African communities are highly differentiated according to land tenure, traditional beliefs, resource availability and gender. Despite this, indigenous and other traditional people are only rarely considered in academic, policy and public discourses on climate change.
