Management of Pamali Inheritance in Kampong Mahmud: A Sundanese Traditional Hamlet in Bandung
Abstract
Pamali (cultural prohibition) is not just a myth that continues to be preserved but it has become hereditary confidence of the community of Mahmud. The Rules of Pamali stated by Eyang Agung Mahmud are still followed in Kampong Mahmud. The Rules of Pamali includes prohibitions of building a brick house and using glass windows, playing gong (goong), petting swans and making wells. The research employed qualitative method and interview as data collection technique. The result shows that the inheritance of pamali in kampong Mahmud occurs in two modes: vertical and oblique inheritance. These modes of inheritance take top-down process and take place during childhood or adolescence. Pamali in kampong Mahmud is inherited from parents at home, teachers at school and Ustaz in Islamic boarding school. The inheritance is received by someone since childhood to adulthood.
