A Critical Assessment of Ghana’s 2024 General Elections
Abstract
Ghana’s 2024 general elections marked the ninth election with two presidential run-offs since the country returned to multi-party politics in 1992. While the country continues to face some election-related challenges, the conduct of elections has been generally peaceful with uninterrupted transfers of power between rival political parties in the last three decades. This article analyzes Ghana’s 2024 general elections with a focus on electoral issues and processes such as the pre-election campaign, management of the elections, and analyses of the election results. The article also engages in a critical comparative analysis of the 2024 election results with previous general elections to unearth emerging trends. The article concludes by exploring the implications of the 2024 general elections on the country’s democratic development.
